Paul's father (a jazz band leader, Trumpet player, and pianist) bought him a trumpet for his birthday when he was fourteen, but Paul exchanged it for a Framus Zenith acoustic guitar, which he began learning to play immediately. (He learned playing by ear. To this day he still does not know how to read or write sheet music!) He wrote his first songs at the age of fourteen, including "When I'm 64" and "I Lost My Little Girl". The latter was written for his mother, who had died of Breast cancer that same year.
