In the Arthurian legends, Mordred was the son of then-Prince Arthur by his half-sister, Morgause. (Arthur didn't know he had half-sisters; his father King Uther had not revealed this fact.)
Mordred was raised in the Orkney islands of far northern Scotland, and when he learned that he was the son - the ONLY son - of King Arthur, he came to Camelot to claim his inheritance and title as prince.

Mordred eventually rebelled against King Arthur, and they killed each other at the Battle of Camlan. Some legends say that Arthur and Mordred were about to reconcile and mend their differences. The armies on both sides of the field were alert for any treachery, and one of the knights was bitten by a snake. The knight drew his sword to kill the snake, but the armies on both sides saw the raised sword as a betrayal, and the battle was joined.
