Most single oxygen atoms recombine directly to for O2 again. Some single oxygen atoms are temporarily stored on nitrogen (N2) molecules, and ozone is formed when this "loose assembly" contacts an oxygen molecule. Some oxygen atoms interact more or less directly with an oxygen molecule to form ozone.
