With the distributor cap off have some one turn the engine over. If the rotor doesn't turn you broke the cam or a timing gear.

On older Fords, the vacuum advance in the distributor has an insulated wire that breaks over time, but still maintains some continuity, until the wire is flexed during braking, as when you come off the freeway, and the engine stalls.
