With the distributor cap off have some one turn the engine over. If the rotor doesn't turn you broke the cam or a timing gear.
Many modern cards actually stop the engine if the car is stationary and restart it as you move to pull away. This saves fuel and reduces pollution.
In the similar situation Mazda dealership thought it's the distributor that needs changing.
If you are moving and need to stop suddenly then turn off the engine and shift down through the gears and use the handbrake. It worked for me. If you do not have to stop suddenly take your foot off the accelerator and slowly decrease speed and go down through the gear box, use the handbrake slowly when your speed had slowed down enough.
it is most likely your fuel pump
Sometimes a car stalls when driving though water because water got sucked up into the engine. This can cause a lot of damage, so don't attempt to restart the car after it stalls. Have the car towed so the engine can be stripped down and drained of the water.
well my car today stopped running while driving the freeway .i took it to the mechanic and said i didnt have any oilnow i need a new engine :(the engine will seize up pdq
When the yoke is pushed down on the engine thrust is stopped (suddenly)
When you are driving on the freeway, most of the work your engine does goes into pushing the car through the air. This force is known as aerodynamic drag...

You're kidding right? The OD is for freeway driving. It lowers your engine RPM and allows for better fuel mileage.
You need to have the system checked for codes to know possible causes.
check the torsion dampener.
You oil pump is not working?
On older Fords, the vacuum advance in the distributor has an insulated wire that breaks over time, but still maintains some continuity, until the wire is flexed during braking, as when you come off the freeway, and the engine stalls. The car restarts and is set to go until you brake again. A real tough fix to find as the wire shows continuity when stopped (and so allows the car to restart). Good luck. Hope is helped.
Check to see if you are getting fuel and spark
your exhaust is probly stopped up
this happened on me, it turned out to be the earth strap from the engine to the chassis had gone rotten and broke loose, this stopped the engine from running but it would still turn over
