How many camshafts are in a V-type engine?

It could have one, two or four cams. Depends on the engine

How can you align dual cams with a bad timing belt?

You can't, everything has to be in the right place for the car to run.

What system does a camshaft belong to?

the cam shaft belongs to the engine timing system A camshaft is used to open valves at specific points on the piston travel back and forth in the cylinder, so the camshaft is syrchronized with the crankshaft, and is also driven by the crankshaft. A camshaft is a steel rod with cams on it, and cams are metal parts that are in the form of a circle which has been pulled out on one side. When the cam turns against the valve, or pushrod, in some cases, the pulled out part pushes the valve open. After it turns a bit, it is no longer pulled out of the circular shape, and the valve closes. Cams vary by the duration of the time that they will hold the valve open. High performance cams hold valves open longer, in most cases, to allow the engine to breathe better, drawing more fuel, and exhuasting the spent fuel longer.

How do you set the timing on a 1991 Chevy 454?

This requires a set of special cam hold-down tools for holding the cams in place and the cam sprockets while removing the sprocket bolts. The procedure is quite extensive. Take a look here for a detailed walkthrough with pictures. http://www.60degreev6.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=DOHC&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=12&page=1 For stock timing you must use the cam hold-down tools to keep the flats on top of each pair of cams parallel to each other. Done one side, turn the engine 360 degrees, then do the other side, so that the left side cams will have the flats facing up while the right side cams have the flats facing down. Good luck!
