Okonkwo killed the messenger because he knew that something needed to be done. He was, in fact, a man of action and that is exactly what he did. He feared the change of his culture and religion. Once the missionaries told them what to do and no one stood up for their own beliefs, Okonkwo had had enough and took action. But when he heard the people around him ask, "Why did he do that?" he walked away with the feeling of despair. He knew from that point on that the Ibo culture was no longer in existence.

Okonkwo hates the messenger and the people he represents. He hopes that the clan will unite behind him, attacking the messengers and then the colonists. Further, the messenger is brazingly and rudely defying the power of the clan, by invoking the white man's power as a threat.

Further, Okonkwo is a man of action, and one that does not tolerate fools.

Okonkwo finds out that Nwoye has been associating with the Christians. Okonkwo confronts Nwoye, holding Nwoye by the neck and asking where he has been, but Nwoye struggles to escape as opposed answering the question. Okonkwo threatens to kill him if he does not answer, and begins beating Nwoye with a stick while still holding him.

After Nwoye (Isaac) converts and Okonkwo returns to Umuofia, Nwoye returns to Okonkwo to tell him that he is to become a teacher in Umuru. However, Okonkwo, having disowned Nwoye for abandoning his father's gods, threatens to kill Nwoye if he is ever in his compound again.

... because he sends a message...

I'm sorry. I had to say it. This is just what Damon Salvatore (played by Ian Somerhalder), from the Vampire Diaries (an amazing show on the CW channel, Thursdays at 8), says in the show. It is a great show and you guys have to watch it. I'm sorry. I'm just a teen who is bored, doing my homework. #boredom

Justified is a subjective word; whether the killing was justified or not depends on how you value things.

Some would say his killing of the head messenger was justified, because it was the only way to stop the white man's influence. Others would say that it was unjustified and stemmed from Okonkwo's lack of effort to assimilate and change with new traditions. Further, murdering was an extreme option. They could have simply ignored the messenger, or beat the messenger for his insolence.

The use of the word 'murder' implies that the questioner wants you to find the killing as unjust.

Okonkwo did no such thing. The oracle had declared that Ikemefuna must die. It was Ezeudu who gave Okonkwo the advice to not bear a hand in Ikemefuna's death.
