the reason why you can't take the key out is probably because it is not in park, i noticed it with my '91 corsica. i have no idea why it won't go into park though

You can buy a Haynes Manual that will have that information. The ignition switch is on the column near the bottom. It is slotted so that you can adjust it. The neutral safety switch mounts there as well.
