Citizens of a country elect a government to lead them and make decisions for them. So every time we have a dispute (say health care) everyone in the United States (or whatever country) doesn't have to go and vote, the representatives will vote. Also if we had another political system like a Dictatorship then people would run around trying to take over. Last, when the colonists split from Great Britain in the 1600's-1700's the colonists split for many reasons one of which being they didn't like the idea of one set leader (that was an American example).

When citizens elect representatives to run a country it is called direct representation. However, when a few officials carry the election, it is known as indirect representation.
In a country were the citizens can elect representatives into the legislative branch of government, i.e. the parliament, there is a representative government. People take part in the making of laws through their representatives ( - indirect democracy).
