I am not sure this is typical of only Middle Eastern artists. Historically, artists and musicians from many cultures have sometimes used their work to speak out on political themes. In addition, many artists (including some from the Middle East) include a religious perspective in their work, expressing the world-view of their particular faith in the art or music they produce.
There are a number of reasons why artists, especially those in Middle Eastern countries, would mingle the artistic with the political. In some repressive and authoritarian nations, artists cannot come out and speak their mind in words, or it could get them arrested. But a painting or a song can be interpreted in a number of different ways, thus protecting the artists from the wrath of the leaders of their country. Further, for many artists and musicians, the creative process reflects a desire to awaken the public and call attention to the injustices that need to be corrected. Art and music are often motivational-- they can awaken emotions in the audience and perhaps encourage a desire to bring about positive change in their society (or in the region).
