Because not all of the blood that is in the heart, which was brought in during diastole, is ejected during systole. There is some back flow of blood, which can't make it over the aortic arch because of lack of pressure, into the heart.

Why is blood pressure highest just after a ventricular systole and lowest during ventricular diastole?

Systole is the phase during which the heart contracts resulting in the movement of blood to the peripheral parts of the body. The contractile force causes increase in the pressure of the arteries, greater than the diastole which makes it possible for the blood to reach the body.

What is the most prominent sign of coronary artery disease?

narrowing or blockage (stenosis) in the coronary arteries, with narrowing greater than 50% considered significant

Why does tachycardia greater than 200 beats per minutes results in decreased coronary perfusion?

The heart does not have enough time between contractions to fill with enough blood to maintain adequate cardiac output. This is especially a concern because the heart itself is perfused during diastole (the period between ventricular contractions).

Which structure(s) carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart?

The right ventricle pumps O2 poor blood into the lungs. The ventricular pressure has to be greater than that of the pulmonary artery to open the pulmonary valve and push the blood to the lungs.

What is the use of a coronary stent?

To open an artery near the heart

Is the pushing force of the heart greater in arteries or in veins?

they are in the arteries

Where is the pushing force of the heart greater in arteries or in the veins?

The pushing force of the heart is greater in arteries than in veins. The arteries are closer to the heart itself.

Why MVO2 and heart rate are inversely related?

MVO2 represents the volume of oxygen consumed by the heart and therefore is not inversely proportional to heart rate but directly proportional. The greater the heart rate the greater work (stress) put on the heart and thus an increase in myocardial oxygen demand. An approximated equation for MVO2 is: MVO2~HR*Systolic blood pressure. Coronary artery flow on the the other hand is inversely related to HR because coronary flow takes place during diastole and because an increase in heart rate decrease diastolic time coronary flow is reduced.

When are the AV valves open?

when ventricular pressure becomes greater than atrial pressure

In an orbiting space station would the blood pressure in major arteries in the leg ever be greater than the blood pressure in major arteries in neck?

yes the blood pressure in major arteries in the leg is greater than the blood pressure in arteries in neck during orbiting in an orbiting space station.

Why is the pressure in arteries much greater than in veins?

Because the arteries have smaller bore than veins. Through smaller cross sectional area blood flows with greater pressure.
