Try disconnecting the battery for at least 10 minutes and then reconnect and try. Check the starter, it don't all the time go right out it will crank but not turn the engine over when it start to go bad, then you you will hear the clicking latter on.
A good possibility would be a dead battery.
replacing the starter is relatively simple, what do is remove the wires from the starter solenoid which is located on top of the starter motor, and mark where the wires came from, there is a small terminal then there is a bigger terminal. oh and un hook the battery before that because it's an unpleastant surprise. then using a jack support the starter before the bolts are removed, then remove the bolts, which in most cases are 15mm, then lower the jack with the starter and put the new one one the jack. raise the jack and hook everything back up. get the starter secured and hook the wires up then the battery and turn it over. jeremy aka ccz5105
If its anything like a 93 all you do is disconnect the battery, disconnect and mark for reinstallation the wires at the starter. Remove the two bolts that hold it, and drop it out. Make sure to hold on to any shims that might be there.

Loose or corroded wiring or a bad starter. Follow the short positive cable from the battery to the starter solenoid; This is a weak link ;replace the solenoid and check and clean your remaining connections. If this just happened, I believe this will get you going. Mark
To remove the starter solenoid from a Lincoln Mark VIII, first disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety. Then, locate the starter solenoid, which is typically mounted on the starter motor. Remove any electrical connections and the retaining bolts that secure the solenoid in place. Finally, gently pull the solenoid off the starter and replace it with the new one, reversing the removal steps.
