This only applies in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere a northern exposure is desirable.

The sun angle, or altitude, varies depending on the latitude. North of the equator, the higher the latitude, the more southerly the sun angle, therefore the greater the exposure to the sun from a southern oriented window. Conversely, in the latitudes south of the equator, thehigher the latitude, the more northerly the sun angle.
