There are different types of molds and so different types of clay work best in specific molds. Plaster molds are generally used with clay in liquid form, known as slip. In this type of mold, the porous plaster absorbs water and the solid clay is deposited on the inside of the mold, allowed to stiffen and then the mold is disassembled and the casting removed and trimmed. Slump molds or hump molds are generally used with clay slabs and the clay depends on what you are looking for in the end results: porcelain, stoneware, low-fire clay etc.
The plaster mold is very, very dry. When you pour, the clay slip is mostly water and the plaster mold sucks up the moisture quickly, creating a coating inside the mold. It's like pouring gravy onto a sponge...the water is absorbed, but the solids stay on top of the sponge if you leave it long enough. It's the same way with a plaster mold..it's a sponge. That's the reason you watch the pour opening and pour out the excess when it is the thickness you need. The plaster will continue to absorb until the clay pulls away from the mold naturally, yet it is still green.
What kind of clay are you using? I have used cornstarch as a separator or Talc powder (e.g. when using a sprig mould). Also if there are any in-cuts in your plaster, it will grab the clay causing it to stay stuck inside the mould. As you can tell my technical knowledge is terrible! It is called Rocco red and on the label says bisque fire 1000C and glaze fire. Has this told you anything? My impression is just a handprint. Not sure if I was supposed to anwser here, but couldn't see where else to! Thanks for helping me!
Painting on dry plaster as opposed to painting on wet plaster. Painting on wet plaster is more permanent because the paint is infused with the plaster.

plaster. ------------ Answer #2 Plaster, Clay, Dirt(packed around the material and then compressed,) solidified carbon, stone, and/or any base metal that can be cut or shaped. Anything requiring a highly heated material to placed within should be solid and heat resistant. Most of these would either be a metal or stone as they withstand higher temperatures than plaster, clay, and carbon.
