If it were the ignition switch, the vehicle would not start even with a jump. The battery is either not holding a charge or the alternator is not providing the charge to the battery. You can have the battery and the alternator checked (usually free of charge) at an auto parts store,

Where is the alternator and how do you replace it on a 1999 Nissan Maxima?

You can find the alternator on the front, right hand side, of your engine. Remove the cables from the alternator. Remove the belt. Remove the retaining nuts. Reverse the process to install the new alternator.

Yes This Cable Is Connected To A Group Of Cables That Run To The Battery Positive Side, To Allow The Alternator To Charge The Battery.,Do Not Remove Or Install An Alternator Until You Remove The Ground Terminal From Your Battery.

What would cause the alternator warning light to come on in a 1979 Chevy Malibu?

Its telling you that for some reason the battery is not charging. Possible cause are: poor or dirty cable connections at the battery posts, bad cables, bad battery. It is also possible that the brushes in your alternator are bad but, the fact that you are getting a light usually indicates the problem is with the battery or cables. For some reason on a GM alternator when the internal regulator in the alternator fails you don't get a light. The only indication you get is that when you turn on the key the battery light doesn't come on. So it is probably not the alternator. Check for corrosion around the battery cables where they connect to the battery. That is most likely the problem. If you have the type that screw into the side of the battery, they may have just worked loose. Good luck

Why would your 1990 Toyota Camry start using jumper cables but as soon as you remove cables and turn car off it won't start again?

well....chanes are high that it's the alternator. take it to autozone, and they will test the alternator for free, and since obviously you cant drive it there, you can still take the alternator out and take it into autozone. you might take your battery too, just incase. it could also be a ground from the alternator

Why does car stop after jumper cable taken off?

If you car dies once your remove the jumper cables, it is most likely an alternator problem. Take your car to AutoZone or somewhere similar and they will test it for you. It could be that there is not enough charge in the battery to sustain the alternator. Try keeping the engine round 1500 revs while taking the jumper cables off.

Why does my car start after jump starting but then dies?

Probably the alternator is bad. Once the jumper cables are removed, there is no source for ignition if the alternator is bad. Have it tested and replaced if necessary.

Should you jumpstart a harley?

No ..well you can but if battery is bad then the engine will shut off when you remove the jumper cables because of the way that H-D has their regulator /alternator wired you must have battery voltage to tickle the alternator to produce voltage, if battery is simply "low" then you might be sucessful.

How do you replace alternator on a Chrysler 300m?

Before proceeding always make sure the engine is off and ignition keys are removed. The battery cables should be disconnected for electrical safety. The first step to replacing the alternator is using a bar to depress the belt tensioner pulley. This will free the serpentine drive belt for release. Next using a hand or power tool the bolts holding the alternator can be removed. Finally bolt in the new alternator and reinstall the serpentine belt. Reattach the battery cables and start the engine to complete the install.
