Would depend on the distance, and the angle of impact. A shot impacting at 90 degrees at close range would be likely to penetrate- a shot at an angle of 45 degrees or greater would be likely to glance off the shield.

What role did military play in Sparta?

Sparta's military was famously brutal and single-minded, both in their own time and to our modern sensibilities. Spartan families would leave infant males in the wild for days at a time, and their survival meant military service. They kept sparse accommodations (living a "Spartan" lifestyle) and freely promoted a sexualized mentorship program in order to foster greater devotion to their comrades.

How long is a spartan spear?

That really depends what kind of spear you mean. In the 7th century BC, the Greeks evolved a new close-order infantry formation, the phalanx. The key to this formation was the hoplite, who was equipped with a large, circular, bronze-faced shield (hoplon) and a 7--9 ft. (2--2.75 m) spear with an iron head and bronze butt-spike (doru).The 4th century saw major changes. One was the greater use of peltasts, light infantry armed with spear and javelins. The other was the development of the sarissa, a two-handed pike 18 ft. (5.5 m) in length.The Macedonian xyston was 12--14 ft. (3.6--4.2 m) in length and could be used with one or both hands.I found all this on Wikipedia, and there is much more information there, but I'm just filling you in on the basics.

What is the weight of a spartan shield made of bronze?

Spartan (and other Greek) shields of the type used by the typical hoplite was not a solid bronze disc. Rather, it was a dish-shaped wooden frame, with a thin layer of bronze sheeting covering the front side. It most likely weighed between 18 and 22 pounds, which is rather heavy for a shield. The aspis, a hoplite shield, could actually weigh as much as 40 pounds. They were ripped back then. It had two inches of wood, covered by leather. It was also coated in a quarter inch layer of bronze, and was 4 feet in diameter. It was a massive shield.

What would a Spartan father tell his son to do with his shield after battle?

I suppose to clean and repair it. There is a story that before battle, Spartan mothers told their sons to either come back victorious or come back carried on their shield.{Spartan mothers would give their sons the shield with the words "Return with it or carried on it!" }
