The description suggests that elastic strain energy may be building up on the fault. This occurs if the fault is not free to move. This energy is dissipated by earthquakes. If non have occurred and this energy is continuing to be stored then the longer the time period since an earthquake, the larger / stronger the potential earthquake. I know this makes no sense but whatever

Before an earthquake foreshocks might occur. ... After an earthquake aftershocks are likely to happen. ... The shockwaves that travel through the ground are called seismic waves.

Why are map showing locations of past earthquakes useful to scientists?

Earthquakes happen when the Earth's crust shifts violently. So if we know that an earthquake has happened in California, then scientist know that the crust under California is unstable, therefore making earthquakes more likely to happen there. Earthquakes can happen anywhere, but the tend to happen repeatedly in certain spots

Did scientists know the earthquake in japan was going to happen?

Would a strong earthquake be more likely to occur along a fault where few earthquakes have happened recently or along a fault where several minor earthquakes have happened recently explain?

it is more likely to have a strong earthquake where few recent earthquakes have happened

What causes an earthquake and how you know weather it is likely to happen in a particular location?

It is when two tectonic plates collide and they rubs, this causes the rubble which you get from the earthquake. You only get earthquakes if your country is in between a tectonic plate or on the tectonic plate.
