The clutch start switch is bad.you will find it at the top of the clutch pedal
That would be your starter. Get a used one at a wrecking yard if the new is too expensive. They are plentiful for Cavaliers and used works just as good as new. Wrecking yard. Before you go and buy a new starter/used starter and change it... check the battery for a good charge... If the battery is low it could cause the starter solenoid to hop. This hopping would also sound like a turn signal. If the battery charge is good then I would agree it is a starter solenoid.
Possible starter or starter solinoid? more info would help
With the flywheel spinning at about 1,000 RPM at idle, the starter, if engaged with the flywheel, would be forced to spin between 15,000 and 20,000 RPM. Once the engine has turned over and is running, the overrun clutch will release the starter from the flywheel and prevent the gears from re-meshing (as in an accidental turning of the ignition key) while the engine is running
You don't. You replace the starter and then start the car. In the past with older cars you could push start the car with an A/T and it would start at around 35 mph, but with modern transmissions I highly recommend against doing this. You may damage the transmission.
probably the starter at least that is where I would start at anyway. I had the same problem but after so long the car would crank and I was told the starter but have not had problem again.
How do you figure the starter is okay just by popping the clutch? Popping the clutch uses the driveline to turn the motor over. The starter is not involved at all.
Clutch interlock should only prevent you from cranking the starter without the clutch depressed. You should be able to push start with this malfunctioning since the rotating motor is doing just what it would be if the starter worked.
Call the parts store.
Misadjusted or bad clutch safety switch? Usually located at the upper end of the clutch pedal
Whines? If its not a grinding scritching noise more common then just a whine, if it is indeed a whine I would tend to think that your starter's drive roller clutch is worn to the point that the drive will need replacing, they are about $10=20. likely time for a starter overhaul, Bushings, brushes, Solenoid.
I'd say your starter motor was on its way out, and its now time to get a new one.
The cost to replace the clutch in a 1999 Chevy Cavalier ranges from $100 to $180. This depends on part brand and labor costs.
does starter turn over if not check starter wire on starter with 12volts tester with key in start no light check fuses check switch on clutch pedal
the sprag clutch ( overrun gear ) is gone and needs to be replaced a new part can be bought but normally the complete starter is changed in some cases squirting diesel oil on the sprag clutch can cure the problem but it normally reoccurs again
Loose or corroded battery cable? Bad starter solenoid? Ignition switch?
i got a quote for 380 dollars with a second hand starter
No...The bolt mounting hole are different...the 2.2 bolts will cross the starter in a "T" fashion and the 2.4 bolts will go in a line "with" the starter. They have different part numbers at the store as well....
