Check you have fuel, check there is no kill switch and check that the electronic gizmo in the key is working correctly - it may need a new battery.
Check your fuel pump and fuel injectors. Have a fuel pressure and flow test done.

Need more info. But, there is a possibly that if there is any water in the gas tank, it will freeze up the fuel pick up. Use the proper fuel de-icer in the fuel tank and check it out. In the mean time, really need more info. What kind of car and engine Etc..
Change the fuel filter. Also, if tend to wait for the empty light to come on you're hurting your fuel pump. Hence, the jerkiness

Check your battery. If it jump-start, its your battery gone. Check your key switch, it might have worn out.
Could be a fuel filter or fuel pump is weak. Change fuel filter and check output pressure of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. You will need a fuel pressure gauge. At idle you should be getting at LEAST 30 to 50 psi.

It sounds like its not getting fuel. Could be clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump.
Probably a weak fuel pump. Keep in mind that the #1 problem with these cars is fuel pump failure once the are a few years old,
Replace the fuel filter first thing. If this continues have the fuel pressure checked.
