Filippo Brunelleschi was the architect of the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo, or Brunelleschi's Dome). He solved the problem of scaffolding for the building by engineering a brick pattern that would support the vault as the work progressed. For over a hundred years, the issue with not being able to obtain enough timber for scaffolding prevented using standard building methods. In 1491, he won a competition to build the dome even though his "secret" methods were not made public. During the late 1900s, a team of brick layers created a model of the technique which was filmed. Look for the PBS documentary on Solving the Mysteries of Brunelleschi's Dome. Later, a scale model was found buried near the church. He also rediscovered the technique of linear perspective with a single vanishing point that had been lost during the middle ages.
