VW recommends you NEVER change the tranny fluid. Most mechanics disagree, if you are going to keep the car beyond 100k, you should change the oil every 60k or less. I don't know the details, but you must use the tranny fluid recommended by VW. No other. You have to drop the tranny pan and let all the oil drain out. Replace the filter. Replace the pan. Add fluid. Do NOT use the "flush" method promoted by many shops. It can damage the tranny.

Buy the correct gear oil (assuming standard tranny not an automatic) Buy 6 foot clear flexible plastic tubing 1/4-3/8" or so. (like used in aquariums) Buy a 17mm hex wrench (Sears) Get tranny warm , drive car for 1/2 to 1 hour. Put car on lift, support car well, car falling on you will really ruin your day. Remove 17mm plug of drivers side of tranny about 1/2 way up. Do this first so if you can't gat plug out you don't have an empty tranny and no way to fill same. Position drain pan under tranny lower plug. Remove plug and drain oil. Let all the badness drain out. could take 1/2 hour.. Clean and replace lower plug. Lift engine hood. Thread clear plastic tubing down into the side hole on the tranny. I use wire to hold in place. I use Redline MTL90 full synthetic oil, it works well. Check and make sure you have the correct oil, if you have the $$$$ synthetic is the way to go. Using the tubing and the conical top from a gear oil bottle, Fill tranny until oil comes out the side plug. Remove tubing and replace tranny plug. Drive car to make sure tranny is happy, repeat this procedure every 30000 miles if you want to keep car forever. Dispose of used oil at your local autoparts store to recycle. Inspect the bottom of the drain pan for metal particles. A few small bits are OK, lots of them or big pieces are cause for concern.
