Mine is the top manifold style, and this is how I do it. After removing the small tube and filter from the top of the manifold, I lay it on the ground with the eight holes facing up. Insert the eight filter grids in the holes, making sure that the one small grid is in the proper place to clear the down tube. Also, be sure not to force the grids in the holes because they are keyed and only fit in one way. If you try to force it, you will break the plastic backbone of the grid. When you have all eight grids installed, lower the bottom piece with the two stainless rod attached onto the grids. Make sure you have the cutout in the bottom piece in the right position so it lines up with the large hole in the manifold. Guide the two stainless rods down the middle of the grids and into the holes in the manifold by looking thru the bottom piece near the rods. Now this is the tricky part, so be patient. Rock the bottom piece to one side and put the tip of one of the grids in the slot provided for it and slowly arrange the grids to fit them into all the slots provided for them. Take your time and make sure all of the grids are aligned properly, as it is very important that they all sit properly in their slots. This keeps the grids separated and allows the water to flow around them. Also, if you don't align everything right, when you tighten the bolts on the stainless rods, you will break the plastic backbone in the bottom of the grid. Now get someone to help you turn the whole unit over, making sure that the stainless rods don't fall out of the holes before you can get the washer, lock washer and nut on them. You don't have to tighten the two nuts too tightly, and don't forget to put the small tube and filter back in the top manifold. Apply a small bit of Vaseline on the o-ring that fits into the manifold and lower the whole unit back in the canister. Clean the large o-ring and sealing area of the canister (I have the stainless one) and slightly apply Vaseline to the o-ring, trying not to stretch it.
