Slide both front seats fully forwards. Then on each side of the centre console, remove the screws. Pull the console towards the rear of the car, then lift it off out of the way. Jack up the car and release the handbrake (chock the front wheels so the car can't roll). Tighten the nut on the rear of the handbrake lever until the wheels begin to bind slightly, then back off a couple of turns. Re-fit the console.

Locate the hand brake adjustment mechanism, usually found under the center console or near the rear brake assembly. Finally, test the hand brake to confirm it functions properly before driving.

Align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys according to the specifications in the service manual. Adjust the camshaft position if necessary and secure the timing belt. Finally, double-check the alignment and rotate the engine by hand to ensure there are no clearance issues before starting.
To adjust the hand brake on a Matiz, first, ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and securely parked. Locate the hand brake adjustment nut under the center console or near the hand brake lever. Turn the nut clockwise to tighten the brake or counterclockwise to loosen it until you achieve the desired tension, where the hand brake engages securely within a few clicks. Finally, test the hand brake to ensure it holds the vehicle in place before driving.
