You loosen the bolt with an electric impact wrench or a half inch drive 28 m socket with two long extensions getting you out past the wheel well then putting on a breaker bar, cheater bar, and putting a fast hard body lunge pressure counter clockwise. You will hear the bolt creak a couple of times and it will be loose.
Unplug the coils, put the 18mm socket on it and an 18" breaker bar and let it rest against the ground and turn the motor over and it'll break loose.
Judging by the video of someone using the starter to break the bolt loose the threads are regular right handed threads
first remove serpintine? fan belt then remove large bolt in middle of harmonic balance. this bolt usually has left hand thread next with a harmonic pulley ,puller, remove harmonic balancer.when removing this, there is a key in the balancer and shaft if a new key did not come with new balancer, make sure not to loose the old one install new balancer with key.use the bolt to pull balancer up tight where it needs to be and use proper torque on bolt
It is normal. Right=Tight Left=Loose. I just replaced my harmonic balancer on tacoma yesterday. I had to put a breaker bar and 2x4 for support. Then very very briefly hit the starter and it broje the bot loose. I tried about everything else and it didn't work.
There are two places that a harmonic balancer can "come loose". # The center retaining bolt can come loose. That usually means someone didn't adequately tighten it. # The outer ring can come loose, which really means that the rubber between the center pulley and the outer ring has deteriorated. Find out which it is and if the balancer has separated, just replace it. If it's a loose bolt, put a drop or two locktite on the threads then retighten the bolt. But someone will hate you when they have to disassemble the engine.
YES... The sound can be compared to a engine knock. If the problem is not fixed enventually you will be left stranded. The center of the balancer will break loose from the drive pulley section . This will cause you to lose CKP sensor operation as well as all your drive belt operations.
tensioner could be loose? bad Harmonic Balancer?
Start by removing the right front tire and support the vehicle with a jack stand. Then remove lower portion of the splash guard near the harmonic balancer. Remove all drive belts. First remove the A/C alternator belt. Loosen the 14mm bolt at the front of the belt tensioner and then loosen the tensioner bolt (it is the one that's sticking straight up, you use a 14mm socket on it.). The power steering adjuster bolt will be accessed from the bottom near the power steering pump. It has a 12mm bolt head on it. You will break the jamb bolt loose first and then loosen the adjusting bolt. Remove belts. Then remove harmonic balancer bolt (19mm). If the harmonic balancer will not slide off the crankshaft then use a two finger gear puller. Place the harmonic balancer bolt back in the crankshaft but do not tighten it. Leave it about a half inch from being all the way in. Next place the puller on to the harmonic balancer. (one finger on each side securely press into the belt groove.) The center puller bolt will rest against the harmonic balancer bolt head. Tighten the puller bolt and make sure the harmonice balancer bolt does not turn. The balancer should come off at this point.
No but they are torqued on at 125 to 130 ft. lbs and as a result, very hard to get broke loose.
A bad balancer can cause failure for more than one reason. First, an unbalanced engine can have severe vibrations set up that will cause material failure in the engine, and it will break internal parts. Second, the balancer can come apart physically outside the engine. If this happens, the loose part can cause damage all over the engine room, and if caught in a belt or pully, jam the crankshaft. I've seen this happen!
FORWARD. IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GETTING IT LOOSE, TRY HEATING IT UP. HONDA PUTS LOCTITE ON THE THREADS. THIS SHOULD HELP.
Put a long breaker bar on socket that fits onto the harmonic balancer bolt then disconnect the main coil wire so the engine will not start. Now gently turn the long breaker bar on the bolt like you are trying to take it out. When the breaker bar hits the floor get into the car and turn the starter motor and like majic the bolt will come loose.
