Click the Insert tab then look for Header & Footer Group.
In Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010, select Insert from the ribbon. You will see the Header and Footer options on the right-hand-side of the menu. There you will be able to modify your current document's header and footer.
In Word 2000-2003, use View>Header. As soon as you insert something in the header or footer, it remains part of your document. In Word 2007-2010, choose the Insert tab of the Ribbon, find the Header & Footer group and click on Header or Footer. You will see a selection of pre-formatted header/footers that you can apply, or you can choose Edit Header or Edit Footer to create your own.
To place a header in a Microsoft Word document using Microsoft office 2007, go to the insert tab. Near the middle of the tab is an option for either a header of footer, click the one you want. If you are using and older version of office, I think you go to view in the toolbar and click the header/footer menu, but I haven't used the older office in a while, so this might be wrong.
When you work with Header and Footer, Design tab is active, click on Design tab and on right side you will see Close Header and Footer.
Footer is text at the bottom of the page. It is important for footnotes or page numbers or other professional features. To insert a footer 1) Double click in the area below the text at the bottom of the page 2) Go to insert>headers and footers>footer (in word 2007: insert tab>footer) To insert a footnote, go to (word 2007) references>insert footnote
Double click in area for header and footer on page, it will automaticaly open tab for design of header and footer. Applies to 2007/2010 maybe and in earlier versions.
Put a section break immediately before and after the page where you want to place the footer. Then in the header/footer toolbar you can de-select the "Link to Previous" icon to create separate footers for each section. There might be other ways to do it too. Alternatively, if you're looking for a footnote, if you go to "References" "Insert footnote" and you will get what you are looking for. You can also customize these so it can be a bit quicker and less tedious.
In Microsoft Word 2003, it is under File --> Page Setup, and on the Margins tab you can set the regular margins. On the Layout tab, you can set the header and footer margins. In Microsoft Word 2007, it is on the Page Layout tab. There is a Margins dropdown menu.
