First you get dark brown, then you mix it with white and possibly a few other colors. Then you have light brown.

Well, to be blunt: brown would. Working with a light grey won't be much different than working with a white paint, except the brown will come out less vibrant. There's a lot of ways to make brown, a simple way would be to add a reddish orange to a bit of dark blue.
