Depending on the car/truck, they either have a nut/washer threaded onto the item or it is simply pressed into place, there is also a wire connected that supplies power and a grounding mechanism (Separate wire or direct grounding housing) If you are unsure, remove the fuse to the unit. (Depending on your vehicle it may not be advisable to disconnect the main battery wire, check your manual.)
The cigarette lighter / pwer socket is a constant hot socket. In most cars you can use this power socket at all times. It is best to remove anything(except the cigarette lighter) from this socket when the car is off.

Usually you unscrew the backing part on the lighter that holds it to the console.

The 2002 Mitsubishi cigarette lighter is held in place with a retaining ring. Remove the retaining ring. Pull the cigarette lighter out. Remove the wiring harness from the end of the cigarette lighter. Reverse the process to install the new cigarette lighter.
Remove the retaining ring at the top of your 2002 VW cigarette lighter. The cigarette lighter will slide out. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the cigarette lighter. Reverse the process to install a new cigarette lighter.

first i would check the fuse, then try a different lighter in socket, if neither of these remedies problem ginna have to take dash apart to remove socket and see what is wrong
To change Honda jazz cigarette lighter socket fuse you need to disconnect the 2P connectors from the cigarette lighter (A) and cigarette lighter light (B) (if equipped).Inspect the connector terminals to be sure they are all making good contact.
