To remove the tailgate lock on a 1989 S-10 Blazer, first remove the cover over the inside of the tailgate by removing the bolts on the side and on the handle. Pop the vinyl away from the tailgate. Then remove the bolts holding the lock on and remove the lock.
open tailgate and there will be two screws. upper and lower. upper by the tailgate latch.
Remove the plastic cover on the tailgate. There are screws in the top and sides. After that you should have access to the area where you see the lock. You will have to pull a pin to remove the lock and it should fall right out.

If no obvious screws or cover plugs, it just pulls off. Most door panels do. May have to remove inside handle first if there is one.
It depends on the model year and size of engine cover based on the engine underneath. For 1996 and newer, you generally have to remove the passenger seat in order to get the cover out of the way.
