To replace the thermostat on a 1988 535i, first locate the top radiator hose and remove the end connected to the motor. Take out the old thermostat and use gasket cleaner to remove the old gasket. Then replace the gasket and thermostat exactly as it was when it came out. Tighten up the radiator hose over the thermostat.
Remove the water supply hose from your 1988 Chevy Cavalier thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Lift the old thermostat out and drop in the new thermostat.
Drain the water from your 1988 Chevy Corvette cooling system. Remove the water supply hose from the top of your thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Remove the thermostat. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.

More then likely you need to replace the Thermostat.
The thermostat is on the top of the motor where the top radiator hose attaches to it. The housing for it should be held on with two bolts. Remove the bolts and lift up the cover. There's the thermostat.
