Blue smoke is caused by worn out piston engine rings or a worn dirty carb.

you can take apart the carb and clean it very easily. photograph the linkage and or video tape it with an iphone.

common hand tools are needed. 7/16 wrench, screw driver, needle nose pliers. work on a surface where you can lay the parts out in order. put it back the same method. other then the time cleaning the parts with a spray or saoking cleaning - it takes less then a minute to take the carb apart.

there is the fuel bowl, main body, two metering jets, the brass float.

the interior of the carb gets pretty gummed up with the crap ethenoyl gasoline now-

If the engine itself is tired from oil never been changed or the air filter never being cleaned than sand and dirt has gotten into the engine and the rings are worn.

do it yourself rebuild kits run around $125.00. used engine for a few hundred.

compare the cost of a new machine to the cost of a repair.

my three tractors are 1980-1985 and run like new because they are serviced twice a year - i clean the air cleaner filter before each use and i check the oil everytime before i start the motor.

tune up kit and oil change runs less than $20.00 - dont keep gas in the tank or fuel bowl between cuts - by a 3.00 fuel shut of knob to put on the fuel linee if your machine does not have one already- VERY IMPORTANT - fuel today sucks and attracts water....

I forgot this and had to fix this - the head gasket on the cylinder head can have a tear in it causing oil by the exhaust valve to get burned in the muffler. the head is held on by 5-6 bolts. remove the bolts and scrap the gasket off. replace it with a new one and tighten the bolts - start the motor and see how much smoke you have. head gasket failure is common and caused by engine heat - motor could be very dirty on the outside - remember it is AIR COOLED and a dirty dusty motor will run hotter and fail sooner.

if your motor runs normal prior to the repair and it ONLY smokes i would look into the head gasket first - if you have smoke and power loss prior to any repair, start with the carb clean up.

it is all EASY if you take pictures and take your time - shop fees are 85.00 and hour plus pick up and delivery fees.

Chevy El Camino 1986 with a 6 cylinder 4.3 fuel injected motor how to stop white blue smoke to stop when starting vehicle?

White smoke is a sign of coolant leaking into the combustion chamber. This normally means you have a blown head gasket. Stop driving the vehicle and repair ASAP. Blue smoke is oil burning. Blue smoke at startup is a sign of worn valve guides or valve seals. Not a repair that has to be done immediately or at all. If it is not using much oil, then you can postpone this repair. Just be sure to watch the oil level.
