I was taught the rule of thumb when it comes to quilting is that any area left un-quilted should not be bigger than your hand. This is to enure the batting does not separate and bunch... Many times the batting you buy will tell you how far spaced the quilting can be for best results!

What is a quilt top?

The quilt top is the uppermost layer of the quilt, overlying the batting (inside layer that gives the quilt most of its warm and depth) and the quilt backing. The quilt top is the layer that is made of pieces of different fabrics laid out to form a pattern or picture, and is often heavily decorated with special stitches. Do you have to quilt selfquilted material?

If the self quilted fabric is finished on both sides, no. Some self quilted fabric isn't "reversible", the backing isn't fabric that you want to be seen. It would depend on the project, but I would shy away from the unfinished one and look for something that is reversible. It's more expensive, but makes for a quick project.
