Its on the left side. Holds 1 US quart (32 fl oz). There isn't a dipstick or a way to easily check it. You change it by draining it from the plug on the bottom, then remove the clutch inspection cover (6 bolts) to replace the big o-ring gasket and refill. Its a little weird refilling it thru the inspection cover - I use a funnel with a flex hose. It fills to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring seen after removing the inspection cover with the bike straight up and down. Mine's an 07 with forward controls - I understand mid controls can add to the weirdness for access - you might have to remove the left foot peg (spring clip on the bottom).
You can use any SAE certified transmission fluid in your 1987 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle. The manufacturer recommends that you never overfill the transmission fluid.
through the clutch inspection cover. The Primary and transmission share fluid.
Harley Sport-Trans Fluid if you can find it. I use it in mine religiously. Works great!

1 quart of oil should do the trick
Your 1976 sportster holds one quart of fluid. I use HD Sportlube or HD PRI ANDTRANS LUBE, but in the olden days I used a 20 wt non detergent motor oil. This fluid lubes the clutches and transmission gears and primary chain.

You should only use Harley transmission fluid from the dealership. It's engineered by Harley for their transmissions.
To check the transmission fluid on a 2001 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic, first ensure the motorcycle is on a level surface and the engine is warm. Locate the transmission dipstick, which is typically found on the right side of the transmission case. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it without screwing it back in, and then remove it again to check the fluid level. The fluid should be within the marked range on the dipstick; if it's low, add the recommended type of transmission fluid as needed.
Use Harley trans Fluid or Harley Formula +
under the back of the primary. either feel around or look under the primary and you will see it. Sportsters use the same fluid for the trans and primary.
