Singer was bought out by an off-shore company that has used the Singer name to sell inferior machines. As a result, a lot of the old, original Singers with metal gears sell used for $300 - $400 or greater. The newer Singers use plastic gears, and are not as well made, nor made with as strong metals. At about that time, there was a great desire among customers to buy the Swiss and Swedish machines - Husqy, Bernina, Elna, Viking, and so on, because they were (are) extremely well made - like the older Singers.

What is a Singer Starlet Sewing Machine?

A sewing machine that's what. I had a Singer Starlet that was the same basic machine as the Singer Genie. A light portable machine produced in the very early 1970's. If you do a search on Singer Genie either on Google or eBay, you should find a photo of it. The starlet was made in France and I have no idea why it had a different name.

Singer went on to developed the continuous stitch machine and he founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which became one of the world's largest manufacturers of personal sewing machines. The first electric sewing machine, a Singer, for the home was introduced in 1889. Singers claim to fame are greatly expanded upon. He claimed rights to many things he did not invent or rightfully own. Pfaff and Necchi both have similar claims of the first electric machine and in further research so will others. Singer aslo was not the first to develope a sewing machine for the home his interest was industrial - he could care less about the home sewer until he realized there was money to be made there that he just had to get his hands on. The sewing machine patent and lawsuit wars for who got the credit were greatly heated and eventually came to some sort of a hault when the Sewing Machine Combination was developed allowing manufacturers to pool their patents and there by charge others a large sum for using any part of the patents. This later became illegal as it was a monopoly that was destroying all but the most weathy who continued to get richer everytime someone tried to build a machine.

Can you buy a sewing machine with modern features that looks like an antique?

This is highly unlikely since they aren't made like they used to be. The best idea is to find an antique sewing machine and modernize it yourself. It will take some money to bring it up-to-date, but is the best way to get an authentic sewing machine in today's world.

Which country was a sewing machine invented?

Whilst there have been many variations of the sewing machine through the years, credit is generally given to Elias Howe. Elias Howe was employed in a machinist's shop, where he had the opportunity to experiment with inventing a sewing machine. He successfully demonstrated his first sewing machine in 1846, and patented his lockstitch sewing machine on 10 September 1846 in New Hartford, Connecticut.Howe faced a legal battle after Isaac Singer invented the up-and-down motion mechanism, and Allen Wilson developed a rotary hook shuttle, both filing for patents. After winning one suit, the three inventors pooled their patent rights in the Sewing Machine Combination. It was under this patent that the sewing machine was then successfully marketed. There have been a number of other dates and places when variations of the sewing machine have been developed. They include:English inventor and cabinet maker, Thomas Saint, who was issued the first patent for a complete machine for sewing in 1790. It's unclear if he ever built it or just patented it in lieu. A replica built from his plans failed to work.In 1810 German inventor Baltasar Krems invented a machine for sewing hats. The lack of a patent means the true facts of dates will never be known. In Austria, Josef Madersperger was granted patent rights in 1815 for a machine he had been perfecting since 1807. In 1841 he was awarded a bronze medal for his sewing machine, but no manufacturer was prepared to develop it. He is still regarded by Germany as the true inventor of the sewing machine. The first functioning sewing machine was invented by the French tailor, Barthelemy Thimonnier, in 1830. Unfortunately like the riots of the Luddites in England the French Tailors rioted and burnt his factory to the ground. In 1834, Walter Hunt built America's first successful sewing machine. Singer in the 1850s, built the first commercially successful machine using the lock stitch which was already patented.
