Fuel or oil deposits build up on the surface of the converter. The engine could be burning oil but you wouldn't know it as long as the converter is functioning properly. But additives in the oil will eventually destroy the catalyst.
My car (year 2000 S500) has the car shaking a bit and clicking or clanking sound when idling. Was told it is due to bad catalyst converter (the inside was broken). Are those the symtoms or there are other symtoms? Please advise. Thanks.
A catalyst
Transmission torque converter or an exhuast catalytic converter?
The only car part I know with the name catalyst is the catalytic converter which converts pollutant exhaust gas into a less harmful bi-product.
how you a torque converter is bad

Platinum, palladium and rhodium are metals used as catalyst in converters.
Lead coats the catalyst in the converter making it inoperable.
