Ash is excellent source of firewood. The best thing about it is you dont have to season it. Just split and burn.

Always season your wood before burning, even Ash. Wet wood reduces the temperature of the primary burn (and hence the heat produced) and the rising steam can extinguish the secondary burn above it.

"Japanese Ash" (Fraxinus mandshurica) is a "hardwood", but not because of the hardness of the wood. Botanically, "hardwood" trees have leaves, while "softwood" trees have needles. Among other differences between the two tree groups, wood from hardwoods is more complex, featuring "pores" and other cell types not found in softwoods. There is therefore a much greater visual variety in hardwoods than softwoods. Regarding hardness, and considered as groups, botanical hardwoods tend to be harder than botanical softwoods, but there are notable exceptions, such as balsa wood (an extremely lightweight, soft botanical "hardwood) and yew (an extremely hard botanical "softwood"). In particular, Japanese Ash is considered to be a "medium" wood, in hardness compared to other wood species.
