The gravity pulls up on the water on the part of the Earth closest to the Moon, as well as causing a bulge on the exact opposite part of the bulge. As the Earth rotates, the location of high tide moves around the world. In every 24 hour cycle, or every full rotation of Earth, there are two high tides and two low tides.
