If it's what I'm thinking of, it has the JJJ in an italic script with "STER" beneath it, would that be right?

If so, the JJJ is the "Brand" or "Makers Mark".

Doesn't actually have anything to do with the purity of the metal etc.

As long as you've got the "STER" there too, you can (pretty much) rest assured that it's .925 Fine Silver...AKA Sterling Silver.
