Self storage facilities provide individual units that can be rented for domestic or commercial use. Units can be as small as 10sqft and as large as 500sqft, with many sizes in between.

As the name implies the person who rents the unit is usually responsible for transporting the items to be stored, storing them and then removing them when storage is no longer required.

Units are normally rented on a 4 weekly or monthly basis. A deposit is usually required as is insurance. If rent payments are not made the self storage operator has lien over the stored goods and after a period of time may the good to recover their debt.

Note - the original question was placed in the computer data storage devices category. Self storage does not normally apply to this category and may explain the ambiguous nature of the question.

Is there a dash between the words self storage such as self-storage?

There is debate about the dash between the two words. Inside Self Storage, the largest publication in the industry, seems insistent on using the dash. However you'll notice the majority of self storage facilities and other websites (including selfstorage.com) do not use a dash. Since self storage is short for "self-service storage," it makes more sense to me without a dash.
