If it is synthetic, it will probably tangle & there is not much you can do to repair it. If you have (quality) human hair, simply condition & gently comb the tangles out.
If a wig has synthetic hair, you can't do much but finger-comb & store it on a wig head at nighttime. Don't treat it like human hair & don't sleep in it. If the wig is human hair, carefully comb & brush it as you would your own.

The number of balls of wool and the ply to use is usually given in the knitting pattern. A test swatch is a good way to ensure there are the same stitches and rows as stated in the knitting pattern. When I was knitting (many years ago) balls (skeins) of wool was given in ounces!
