The stitch selection panel is the function on a sewing machine that allows you to choose which stitch you want to sew: a straight stitch, zig-zag, embroidery stitch, etc.
You should have an instruction booklet with your machine. That will show you where everything is. This will vary from machine to machine with some being simple and others you should be a rocket scientist to use. The stitch width selector is pretty self explanatory. You use it to select the width of the stitch you want to use in a zig zag stitch.

I do not beleive the zig zag works as mine does not, looking at the top of the machine where the zig zag knob is located the internal cam seems to be on backwards thus reandering it useless. The machine sews excellent in streight stitch. sorry!
Optimally, a serger is the best way to finish material that ravels. If you do not have a serger, you can finish the raw edge with a regular zig-zag stitch. If you don't have a zig-zag stitch on your machine, you can simply reinforce your seam with another row of straight stitching.

My Singer 3343c works with disks. The disks need to have the stitch width (zig zag width as it were) changed from zero to some width. When the stitch width is 0 all the disks are a straight stitch.
zig zag
The Singer 201 is a straight stitch machine only so it won't do a zigzag stich.
If you do not have a serger you can use a zig-zag stitch over the edge of the fabric.
yes but you have to use the zig-zag or applique stitch setting zig-zag=width-4/5 length=2 applique= width-4/5 length=0.5
It probably does but I couldn't find an exact match for it on managemylife.com where you can get free copies of most kenmore manuals. I did find a manual for the Kenmore 153.13141 which shows the manual for the 1341 model kenmore. You might want to check and see if this is your machine or close to it. [I have this machine, and yes it does have a straight stitch. You simply set it to the zig zag stitch setting, and then set your stitch width to "0". It will then perform a straight stitch. -mmo)
