There could be a few things wrong with the car but I own a 02 Mazda Protege ES and here are some things that I have gone through with mine. The EGR valve was recalled on these cars so that may cause the issue and may need to be replaced. Also I have had problems with the ignition coils in the car going bad and that causes the car to run rough and hesitate. I am replacing my second set of them with OEM coils as the cheap set I put in only lasted one year. If you leave the ignition coils go too long it can foul your catalytic converter eventually and that can cost a few hundred bucks to replace. If you don't have a check engine light on try some fuel injection cleaner and run a couple tank fulls of premium fuel and see if it might be a clogged injector. If the check engine light is on take it to a Autozone and they can pull the code for it, if the code shows P0301 Random Misfire that is the same code I had and replacing the coils fixed that issue. Hope this helps.
You should check your spark plug wires. That's gonna be it
9 times out of 10 is a your EGR valve stuck open due to rust, do a google search for protege low idle you'll find it! good luck
Try the idle air control motor
The idle air control valve is also known as the idle speed valve. On a 1999 1.6 literÊMazda Protege, it is located at next to the throttle body.Ê
Higher then expected Idle, at least 200 RPM. May be a vacuum leak, a dirty Idle Air Control valve.
It happened to me last week. Turned out to be the EGR valve that was not moving anymore. This valve is used when the motor is in idle which is why the motor was running almost fine when I was putting gas...
To set the idle speed on a 1996 Mazda Protege, first ensure the engine is at normal operating temperature. Locate the idle air control (IAC) valve, which is typically on the throttle body, and check for any vacuum leaks or issues. If adjustments are necessary, you may need to use a scan tool to reset the IAC learning procedure, as the idle speed is electronically controlled. Always refer to the vehicle's service manual for specific procedures and specifications.
it is a camshaft position sensor check vaccume lines also as for some reason this will throw this cone because of rough idle
What you are Experiencing is known as a "Flat-spot". It is the result of a fuel air mixture that is too lean, meaning that it isn't getting enough fuel with the air. Had the same thing in the shop the other day on a different year car. Have Mazda richen the fuel to air ratio and the problem should go away.-Mr. Mechanic-AnswerI have seen a few with the same problems.the air flow metre was reading within specs, runs rough at idle and hesitates sometimes. we replaced the air flow metre and it fixed the problem. see if they can use one off another car to test it. im a recent ex Mazda mechanic AnswerI have a 2002 P5, and it occasionally hesitates when beginning acceleration. It hasn't really been a problem, but I wonder if it has to do with the aftermarket injen cold air intake that was on it when I bought it used.
I have a Mazda 2001 Tribute and I just replaced the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). I searched for Idle Speed Control actuator and there does not appear to be one. The IAC is the silver module right on top of the manifold.
if you find a answer on the idle issue let me know my 95 does the same thing as far as smoking mine does that too when its cold out i was told it was the valve seals r bad
Why is that my idle is low what cost that to do it
