Not all 2001 Xterras came with the optional 4X4 feature. If you don't have a manual lever to take it in and out of 4X4, then it doesn't have the 4X4 option.
by turning the knob behind the gear shift below the radio from 2wd to 4wd 0r 4wd low. if you are going to 4wd low stop and put vehicle in neutral first.

A computer board went on my 2001, (1000 bucks! Yikes) but the mechanic by passed it and put a toggle switch on the console for 50 bucks. Shift into 4wd hold toggle switch for a few seconds and away we go in 4wd.
mine has got 185,000 and is still going strong
that 4wd is engaged and working if it blinks there is a problem with the 4wd
Check your fuses if it is not your fuses i would say check your hazard switch, mine went bad on my Nissan and caused that problem
The bell housing on the transmission will be the same. The blocks were the same for the D21 and D22/WD22 KA engines. The heads were the only change. Mounting to the crossmember may be different. Have not had a chance to try this myself, but plan on it. When you convert to 4WD, us V6 4WD components off the same year Xterra in front. Also, the 4cyl transmissions are not designed to take as much torque as the v6 ones. As long as you KA is stock, you'll be fine.
The dashboard switch to the lower right side of the stearing column. If it's not there then you do not have 4WD.
go to autozone.com and enter your 2001 Nissan frontier,engine size ,2wd or 4wd,then look up thermostat,then to the right of screen,click on repair guide and it will show and tell you how to replace.
with new filter 3 3/4 quarts for the 2wd and 4 1/8 quarts for the 4wd
just a Nissan truch,no d21 or 720,the year it is just a1994 Nissan pickup ,2wd or 4wd.
