To access the tail light bulb on the Nissan xTerra, first remove the two bolts which anchor the light cover to the vehicle. A 10mm socket wrench should fit the bolts. After removing the bolts, grasp the light cover with both hands, (both hands on the side where you removed the bolts) and pull straight towards you. Be firm - there will be some distortion of the cover before the other connection 'pops' out. The light cover will come off completely. The bulb assembly is then easy to access. To reattach the light cover, repeat the process in reverse. Simply push the cover straight in until it pops, then reattach it to the vehicle with both bolts.
For 2006 model and with a small hands to grab the tail light assembly straight out, a string with about 1/8 of inch in diameter, placed behind the lens, in the middle, top to bottom, then pulling the string out, the lens assembly pops right out.
