The Real answer Most cars will eventually lose enough 134a freon in their system that the low pressure switch will prevent the compressor from coming on,thus you cannot add freon. if you want to add froen simply take the connection on top of the condenser(looks like a 12 or 16 oz alum can) take a paper clip or small piece of wire and insert into wire part of switch (jumper it out) this will start your compresser pumping, now you can connect your 134a to low press side and 1 can or less to get cool air ...if the 134a can starts to ice on the outside it is empty..1 can 134a process with ac on high will take 15 to 20 min..at least it did on mine..be safe ..use hoses and gauges if possible..follow can directions... If all components of the air conditioning system are working properly there should be no reason for adding refrigerant. this could cause future and more expensive damage to the system.have the system checked for leaks and diagnostics by a professional before adding more.

You need gauges to properly add freon to the system. Using a kit from the auto parts store R-134a can be added to the low pressure hose, it will have a cap on it with an L stamped in it. Follow the directions on the kit. Most auto parts stores sell a prepackaged kit with a bottle and hose. There are two caps on the A/C lines. ONe is marked H and one L for high and low side. They are different sizes and the recharge bottle will only fit on the low side. It's a simple procedure and can be done by the average car owner.

Comment: Freon has been banned since 1996 by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Some auto air conditioners use R-134a instead of freon.
