One of the nice features of the Echo is that it has a Transmission Fluid filter. This means you may never need to change the transmission fluid (it is not listed at all in the owner's manual scheduled maintenance). If you feel that it really does need it because you have not driven under normal conditions, you can find details on how to do it, here: http://groups.msn.com/Sorensonbrian/atfchange.msnw

Check your owners manual. It says:Change automatic transmission fluid only as necessary. Generally, it is necessary to changeautomatic transmission fluid only if your vehicle is driven under one of the Special Operating Conditions listed in your "Scheduled Maintenance Guide" or "Owner's Manual Supplement". When changing the automatic transmission fluid, use only "Toyota Genuine ATF Type T- IV"(ATF JWS3309 or NWS6500) to aid in assuring optimum transaxle performance.Notice: Using automatic transmissionfluid other than "Toyota Genuine ATF Type T- IV" may cause deterioration in shift quality, locking up of your transmission accompanied by vibration, and ultimately damage the automatic transmission of your vehicle.
There is no drain plug assuming it is an automatic transmission it is drained when removing the transmission pan and changing the transmission filter.
Depends on how many Cylinders on the car?
The "lockup torque converter" could be engaging too soon. Take it to a transmission shop to have it diagnosed.
On my 2000 automatic 4WD, I have to drop the pan to change it. It is designed as a sealed transmission and is not supposed to need changing all that often.
