Starter on a Subaru is one of the easiest starter changes since it is located at the top of the engine rather than under as many vehicles have. Has been a number of years since I did one but it was not difficult, involving removing other parts, like the air induction system until you can reach the fasteners that hold the starter in place.

If you want detailed instructions you should purchase a Subaru service manual available from eBay sellers for around $10. It will be invaluable if you plan on doing maintenance on your Outback in the future. It is the first thing I buy after floor mats when I get a used car.
