There is a dipstick in the engine compartment to check the Transmission Fluid. Read the dipstick and it will tell you whether to check it "with engine running in park or in neutral or engine off or whatever". It should also tell you the recommended fluid. Fill it through the same dipstick tube. They make funnels just for that. DO NOT OVERFILL.

And it's a hard little bugger to find. Mine is directly under a tube between the battery and engine. Unless you stand off to the side you can't see it. Once you do it's fairly easy to find.

A 2001 Mazda Protege has a seal system, meaning the car does not have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid.
