To add to the question, yes...I've read the instructions in the manual and tried them.
I bought a used 2000 Subaru Forester S. I went to the dealership and they pulled up my VIN and sold me a remote. I read the instructions in the manual for programming the remote and they don't work.
Yes, Held the programming button for 15 seconds. Yes, the car cycled the locks (only two times though I'm pretty sure...not three as the book says). Yes, then I pushed the lock button on the remote.
No...locks didn't cycle after pushing the remote and then the remote still doesn't work.
Anyone else have an experience like this? I'm frustrated and want to avoid paying the dealership extra to program the remote. Is it possible they've sold me the wrong one? One site shows the remote to be the square one with the larger lock button and the smaller unlock button, but with gray buttons. The dealership gave me one with colored buttons (which supposedly might be for a 2002 model.
Anyone with a 2000 that can give me info on what your remote looks like (maybe even part number) and let me know if the programming instructions work for you?

Yes, it is definitely good to use transmission fluid in your Forester. I highly recommend it and use it in my 2000 with no problems.
Yes they do offer this, at least they did on my 2000. Check your owner's manual.
