On either side of the hazard and defroster switches are clips that hold the switch in place. You have to pull them out. You might be able to pry it out using finesse and a thin blade such as is found on a butter knife but the clips must be pressed in to allow you to remove the switches. If you aren't gentle enough, you'll break the switch. When you get the switches out and disconnected, there are two screws straight back towards the firewall which must be removed. Use a bit of rubbery sticky sealant on the tip of a long Phillips screwdriver so the screws don't fall behind the dash. Work the control assembly out by gripping top and bottom.
