Removing the climate control assembly (referred to in the service manual as the "heater control") is a fairly complicated procedure. Having gone through the hassle, I'm sharing these tips with the hope that what I've learned can help you with the job.

1. Remove the glove compartment by removing the Phillips screws at the bottom of the compartment.

2. Remove the bar at the bottom of the glove compartment (bolt on right, screw on left side).

3. Remove the lower center console panel by unsnapping it and pulling it forward. You will have to press out the fasteners on the left and right sides.

4. Snap off the trim plate for the center console. Use a taped screwdriver or plastic pry tool to unsnap the trim plate. It just pops off.

5. Remove all of the knobs for the heater control unit. Pull the AC switch straight out. Remove the heater control face plate. DO NOT remove the two screws on the left and right of the heater control panel just yet.

6. Remove the radio by unscrewing the four screws. Pull the radio forward, disconnect the electrical connectors and the antenna.

7. Pull off the panel dimmer control knob (lower steering column cover panel).

8. LOOSEN the lower steering column cover panel. (You can remove it completely, if you wish.) You need to remove the lower right bolt completely, because it also attaches the center console panel.

9. Remove the upper center console panel. One hard-to-find Phillips screw is on the left side of the panel, covered by the lower steering column cover panel (that's why you need to loosen that panel in step 8--to access that screw).

10. NOW remove the two screws on the left and right of the heater control panel.

11. Move the heater control unit around so you can access each electrical connector and each cable. It helps to push the heater control unit BACK, so that it can go behind the piece of plastic that crosses the center console area just below the heater control unit. Then you can move it up and down to access the top and bottom of the unit.

12. Disconnect the control cables. (This is easier said than done.) The cable release tabs allow the cable sheath to be pushed BACKWARDS out of the connector (don't try to pull them upwards). Once each cable is backed out of its connector, you can unhook the S connector cable end from each lever.

13. The AC connector snaps out UPWARDS. Push a screwdriver into the cavity where you pulled the AC switch out of previously, gently pry UNDER the connector, and it will snap out upwards.

14. In order to remove one of the cables, you will have to unsnap the white blower speed control switch (the cable is threaded between the blower switch and the heater control unit). A tab on the back side of the switch (accessible from the opposite side) allows the whole switch assembly to be slid toward the back of the heater control unit. Once the switch is removed, the cable end will be completely disengaged from the heater control unit.

Note: You do not have to remove the cup holder to get the heater control unit out.

I hope this saves you some time. If you have any comments that can help refine this procedure, please share them.

Now . . . Good luck putting it all back together!

Best wishes,

Jon
