1. Before jacking the car up, remove the outer joint splitpin and slacken the nut. These can be TIGHT! The best tool is a 3/4" power bar with a 32mm socket. Spanners tend to slip off. You might have to have someone have their foot on the brake to stop the car moving. If necessary use a length of pipe with the powerbar for more leverage. 2. Jack up from the left side only and put on stands. Front and rear is best. 3. Remove the road wheel, the inner plastic shield, the leftside undershield and the brake caliper. Tie up out of the way. Remove the two bolts connecting the spring/damper unit to the kingpin and the outer joint nut. Carefully undo the INNER joint large boot clip. 4. Now pull the kingpin towards you and TAP the end of the cv joint spindle. The whole hub assembly will turn to full left lock and the cv joint spindle will slide out of the bearing. 5. Now pull the whole driveshaft out. The inner joint will split laving the major part still in the gearbox. This keeps the oil in! 6. With the shaft in a vice remove the circlip retaining the inner joint spider. Wear safety glasses as they can fly! Remove the spider, it will have to be driven off with a hammer and drift. (use a screw driver when no one is looking!). Undo the inner boot clip and slide off. Some models have a rubber damper clipped on to the shaft. CAREFULLY remove the clips and slide off. 7. Now the outer boot is exposed and you can replace it. 8. Reassembly is the reverse process. Make certain the spider goes back on the right way around. If its not, the circlip will not fit.
The old clips can be reused on the inner joint. In case you are wondering, the reason for doing it like this is the outer joints RARELY come off the shaft without damage. I've had to cut off a worn out cv joint with a cutting disc to avoid damaging the shaft. Regards, Alistair.
No, replace it.

I dont know what is reasonable, but my dealer said it would be about $900 to replace both outer CV boots on my 2001 Pathfinder.
To pull the outer CV joint on a 1996 Honda FourTrax ATV to replace the boot, first, remove the wheel and brake caliper, then disconnect the axle nut using a socket. Next, use a hammer or a CV joint puller to tap the joint off the axle shaft, taking care not to damage the splines. Once removed, you can replace the boot and reassemble the joint by reversing the steps. Be sure to use new grease and securely fasten all components during reinstallation.

It's part of the driveshaft outer cv joint. Replace the shaft as per 2002 Clio 1.5dci
AnswerI don't believe these are repairable.... they just have to be replaced. Often it is cheaper and more efficient to replace the whole axle since the cost of recon axles is now so cheap. My problem is getting the outer cv joint off the axle to replace the boot. I recall from my days at an Infiniti store that the techs used a big vice and a heavy hammer to beat the joint off the end of the shaft. The object is to compress a snap ring which is on the shaft inside the joint. The hammer method works...eventually. But I feel sure there is a smarter and quicker way to achieve this. Does anyone know of one?Get the CV joint puller tool and you can take the joint apart. If it is worn, you will need a new one.Usually it is cheaper and easier to replace the whole axle, regardless.
It's easier and more cost/effort efficient to replace it with a rebuilt shaft. That way you get an inner & outer joint, new boots and it becomes a remove & replace instead of a grief filled search for bits and pieces to fix yours.
To replace the outer CV joint boot on a Honda ATV, first, lift the ATV and secure it on jack stands. Remove the wheel and axle nut, then disconnect the axle from the hub and pull it out. Carefully cut off the old boot and clean the CV joint, then apply new grease before sliding on the new boot. Finally, secure the new boot with clamps, reassemble the axle, and reinstall the wheel.
the outer CV joint is a non-serviceable and non-removable item on the escort and ZX2. If it is bad it will need replacement. to remove the boot and replace it there are two ways to do it. (1) cut the boot off and replace it with a speed boot (a boot split down the length which then gets glued together) (2) either cut the boot off or slide it off. This method will take more work than the speed boot. This will require removal of the complete half axle. You will first have to separate the inner joint and remove that boot as well. Once the joint is separated, the tripod bearing will have to be removed. Once all this is done the new boot for the outer CV joint can be installed. If you do this method, you should also install a new inner boot as well.
The outer layer of the joint capsule produces a fibrous membrane known as the synovial membrane. This membrane secretes synovial fluid, which helps to lubricate and nourish the joint, reducing friction and allowing smooth movement between the bones.
